How to travel with Wikipedia and Wikitravel?

5. 10. 2008

Internet is worldwide, internet enables communication, buying tickets, booking hotels, finding facts and interesting places, browsing maps... Sounds like a perfect traveling tool. And it sure is. Today we will look at two tools powered by users: Wikipedia and Wikitravel.

Organizing trips and business travel on-line is easy, educative and also fun. Without spending a dime you can get almost any information about the destination you want to travel to. There is one problem - there are too many informations. The general search might not bring you the perfect results. So when you want to find out most about specific destination, here are some tips.

Wikipedia.org

Who wouldn't know Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia anyone can edit? Not only in English, but in virtually any language, Wikipedia is becoming the most favorite starting point of any general research on-line.

You won't find any specific information about hotels or how to book hotel in a city you are traveling to. But Wikipedia is a perfect source of general information on almost any subject, traveling is no exception. You will find some history of the city, interesting facts, current events, pictures of the city etc.

Don't forget to loog up the country you travel to as well. You'll get some crucial information about currency and it is always useful to know the flag :-) Of course, you can get lot of these info on our site as well, for each destination we list several travel-related facts: Time zone, Currency, Oficial languages, capital, electricity (very important, don't forget to check whether your mobile charger can be plugged in).

Also, look up the city you travel to. For example, if you want to travel to Prague, Czech Republic, you simply search Prague in Wikipedia. Immediately you know where Prague is, what is the population, what kind of transportation you might expect here... You will probably get more information than you need for your traveling, but thanks to the navigation menu, you can still make use of it. Wikipedia is also a great place for finding interesting trivia, however insignificant it might seem. For example the section In Popular Culture you will usually find some facts noone ever knew of. This is especially useful for movies, not so much with cities. Keep in mind that Wikipedia.org is a general encyclopedia. That is why we also recommend you...

Wikitravel.org

Based on the very same engine as Wikipedia, there is a great site for your travel research - Wikitravel.org. Think Wikipedia, only fully devoted to traveling, destinations, travel tips, trips, cities, sightseeing, hotels, food, transport, you name it.

Again, you simply insert the city (Prague, for example) and there you have it. All the info for travelers, separated into chapters:

  • Languages
  • How to get in Prague
  • How to get around Prague
  • What to see in Prague
  • What, as a tourist, you can do in Prague
  • What to eat and drink
  • Where to sleep in Prague
  • How to stay safe in Prague

Well, we haven't found any better source of traveling info yet. Of course, there are many sites who claim to help you, and often they do, but Wikitravel has to be admired for its consistency and volunteer-driven content improving.

How to choose a hotel?

We didn't write this article just for nothing. We believe that, as the sites mentioned above, our site Art Of Travel.eu also makes your traveling easier.
